Ogie Kanogie-
Weaving The Force into Clothing

By Amanda James

Massiel Bueno and Jamie Hormel we friends since childhood. They grew up in San Diego, were Massiel was and still is, a surfer. Their design line, Ogie Kanogie is a collection of wearable, soft, and comfortable coats and jackets. They have developed a strong celebrity following, and are thrilled with the positive feedback their line is receiving. I caught up with Jamie, who filled me in on the genesis and growth of their line.

"Well, to start, neither Massiel nor I are trained in design. Ogie Kanogie has been a long and interesting road for both of us, and we're thrilled that we're getting great feedback on our designs.

Our business started when Massiel, an avid surfer, wanted a cozy coat to warm herself up in when she was out of the water. She found some material she loved and made a coat for herself. She got tons of compliments, and ultimately it was stolen. She made another, and brought it to me, thinking I'd like it. As a person who always feels cold, I loved it! It was stylish, comfy and I loved that was machine washable. So we began our search for fabrics and findings. We both love texture and color and so we try to find fabric that grabs our attention. We would cut samples, wear them, wash them, ask opinions. We wanted to involved our kids as much as possible, and they've become our best critics. They help with fabric selections and design. My son helped choose the name of the company!

Then we started making dresses and we do it in the same way as the coats. Fabrics that appeal to us and styles that we want to wear. We've just designed a coat for men, and hope to be able to add it to our collection soon."

Their devotion to comfort and affordability is appreciated by the likes of actress Madeline Zima "These are great!" said Zima, "They fit my long arms!" She added.

Bueno and Hormel describe their coats as "Grab and go anywhere, from campus to countryside."

According to their site: They use only beautiful and fun fabrics, including faux furs, faux
suede, recycled polyesters and organic cottons-all machine washable, and made in the USA.

Jamie and Massiel also wanted their products reasonably priced, so everyone could have the perfect Ogie for any occasion, all year long. Among all of their priorities, Jamie and Massiel thought it important to have Ogies made in the USA, doing their part to help keep jobs here. Every Ogie pattern is cut and sewn in Los Angeles, California. Jamie and Massiel are proud to offer superior quality at reasonable prices in today's market.

Massiel Bueno is a mother of two and resides in Los Angeles, CA. When she's
not working you can usually find her surfing.

Jamie Hormel is a mother of three kids, five dogs, a pot bellied pig, two miniature goats, and some horses. She
